PostHeaderIcon Can a Septic tank back up into your sump pump?

Whenever we use large amounts of water, like the washer, dishwasher, shower, shortly afterwards water begins pouring into our sump pump through the “tubes” that bring water in from the outside and smells like sewage. We are trying to figure out why. Help!
Also the tank has already been pumped!

You have a lot going on. A photograph or two and or a sketch sure would help. Now I ain’t no plumber, and I don’t even play one on TV, how ever a couple of things may help here.

First, separate your sump line from house-hold waste water. The sump is generally used to to remove water seeping in and around your foundation. It is just run-off like water from your gutters. It has no business in your septic system, other than to cause you problems.

Consider installing a one way valve. One that I use goes under the brand name Jakell. Most any hardware store has them. They are easy to install.

Secondly, it sounds as if you have a high water table in your area. A standard leach field system may not be the best thing for you. You may wish to talk to one of those plumbers whose daddy was a plumber or dog was or is a plumber something ( a professional). Ask about a sand filter or treat & reliese system.

    Best of luck to you.

Yes, if the sump pump discharge is running into the same line as the laterals to the septic tank. Sounds like a back-up in the main after the sump pump line. Snake the main. What is the pump used for? If it’s just laundry or a sink line, dig another pit and pump it outside. It will save you a world of grief. Hope this helps.
