how does an electric water heater produce dangerous hydrogen gas?

Author: my water heater just installed today started screeching so i was reading the manual and it said this noise could be made when it was releasing dangerous highly flammable hydrogen gas. WHY is my whirlpool electric water heater making any gas? This freaks me out a lot! How much gas does it leak? I have 1000 questions!

Do I need a new hot water heater?
I ran 2 loads of laundry 2 days ago on a hot cycle. Since then, I have no hot water running at all anywhere in my house. The water heater is a 40 gallon electric and has been here since 1979.
Up until 2 days ago, the hot water was perfect.
what would happen if you shot a hot water heater?
what would happen if someone shot a working hot water heater with a gun? would it explode?
